The shawl started with color! I fist met Danica, of Nature’s Luxuryat Vogue Knitting Live a few years ago. I was quite smitten by the beautiful yarns and extraordinary dyeing, so, when I visited one of my treasured local yarn stores, Forever Yarn, last spring, I dove right in and came away with 3 glorious skeins of La Parisienne in colors Alcazar, Rungis and L’Orangerie.
As is often the case for me, these boldly colored skeins sat in a basket in my studio while ideas percolated. Then, much to my surprise, last New Year’s in Maine, they screamed out to me… …they are the colors of the lovely textiles of Antigua, Guatemala, whose fabulous textiles are featured throughout my Maine house!
I immediately envisioned a multi-colored, half-circle shawl with a bit of a frilly edge! The shaping was completely new to me and I dove straight into the challenge. You know, if you follow me on instagram, that the knitting was not as smooth as one would have hoped. At one point, I even cut out a section, reworked it and grafted the shawl back together again. But it was a fun knit and I loved seeing my notion come to life!
But when it was finished, and after photographing it the first time, I knew there was still something missing! The Guatemalan textiles around me all had even more colors and more fantasy. SUMMER ZEST needed something more.
I was very reluctant to add embellishment; it just didn’t seem like something I would do. But after really looking at the photographs (which I do love), I decided that I just had to go for it!!! I pulled out a few bright colored “left overs” from previous projects and went to town! I am so, so happy that I did.
