Yesterday was the first springlike weather here, so I took the opportunity to wear my new shawl, WAYPOINT, instead of a coat to the Guggenheim Museum! My daughter was kind enough to take a few photos to show you the scale of the largest version of the shawl.
I love the idea of an oversized wrap, so this size is my favorite (shown here knit in Qing FibreSuper Soft DK in color Daffodils) but the pattern gives you options! Below is the smaller size (knit in Qing Fiber Super Soft DK in color Berry Milkshake), in the Shawlette size. Both sizes are shown using Jul Designsclosures, which are always stunning additions. The shawl is knit end-to-end, beginning and ending with a 4-st I-cord, taking shape through a series of increases and decrease and is then embellished with an oversized tassels!
The second shawl, TRIANGULATE, is a triangle shawl utilizing the same pattern ideas as WAYPOINT! It begins with a 4-st tab in St st and, in typical triangle shawl fashion, uses increases at the center and edges to grow in size. And, like WAYPOINT, uses a growing number of eyelet rows to add textural interest. The tassels in this case, are added to the wingspan ends. Again, I love the Larger, oversized version, but the pattern also includes a smaller size, for those who like less volume.
If you are wondering about the names, remember that I am a sailor! WAYPOINT is a point along the route of a charted path. I think of it as an arrow pointing the way. And TRIANGULATE is how you go about charting a course. Since these two shawls are varying takes on the same theme, I thought these nautical terms were appropriate!
Both shawls are:
- Relatively easy to knit,
- Edged in elegant I-cords,
- Geometrically shape through a series of increases and decreases,
- Use eyelets in a growing number of repeats to add textural detail and
- Add oversized tassels strung to the I-cord ends, as embellishment.
The yarn for all 3 shawls shown is Qing FibreSuper Soft DK, which is hand dyed in London. I am absolutely in love with this yarn both for its soft and springy hand and for the extraordinary dyeing. Every time I see it in a shop, I glom right onto it! While it is available at several shops in the US, I bought mine at Loop in London, which you all know is one of my favorite local yarn shops. I was so lucky to have breakfast with the owner, Susan Cropper, a few weeks ago. I wore my TRIANGULATE and she swiftly took it right off my back and back to London for a visit. While the shop has many colors unstuck, Susan has placed a new order and is expecting a restock shortly!
