Sometimes inspiration for my sweater designs comes from the past, sometimes from the present, and sometimes it seems to come out of the blue. But I do know that a trip to London that I took with my family in 1968 inspired my next sweater design, Carnaby Street.
London at that time was a media darling, known globally as Swinging London for its youth-oriented culture and playful attitude toward art, music, and fashion.
The Beatles had just released the album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band, Mary Quant was the designer of the day, and Twiggy the top model. Girls were birds, friends were mates, and everything wonderful was fab or gear.
During our trip my mother took my sister and me to the “mod” fashion capital of the world, Carnaby Street. Walking down Carnaby Street is a short video clip taken around the time of our visit that captures the art and whimsy of what I saw there.
Everywhere I looked, I saw clothes with bright colors, crisp lines, and op-art contrasting design. I returned home with a new mini-skirt and go-go boots to go with my geometric Sassoon haircut. Didn’t I look like a Beatle?

Inspired by that trip, I designed a simple shell pullover with contrasting stripes and a retro feel. Here is my sketch for my soon to be published sweater design…Carnaby Street!

You look so nice on the photo. Shy and venturous at the same time. And I love your sweater design (I also saw it on Facebook). Great color combination!
