It has been a long time coming. From early on, I wasn’t sure that I liked the black and white logo. It seemed very corporate and staid, when I wanted an open/ white look. The good news was that it was done. It was one thing that I didn’t need to worry about. So I lived with it and tried to work with it.
But this summer I enrolled in Shannon Okey’s Designer 101 class… and everything fell apart. Or, maybe everything fell into place. The very first thing she asked us to do was develop our identity. I had already read her book, and I knew this was critical to the whole process of building a business — I did go to business school. But, I really wanted to believe that I had already been there, done that. As fate would have it, the more work I did in the class, the more uncomfortable I became with the name/ logo/ layout.
Then last week I started preparing for a crafts fair that I am doing with my daughter, Amalia, in November. In addition to my patterns, I am making some of my cashmere, machine knit, shawls, scarves and baby blankets. To call these “hand-knits” is a bit ingenuous, even when they are knit and they are made by hand…. This has always bothered me. But when I went to order labels, it really bothered me. And, I just couldn’t do it. I knew deep down that I couldn’t invest any more in something that was just wrong …
